What if the Constitution guaranteed every American the right to healthcare?
In the second-to-last episode of the original Latter Day Lens, Matt, Shawn, and returning guest Marc tackle healthcare costs, political change, and the personal sacrifices involved in standing up for your beliefs.
Matt introduces a proposed constitutional amendment modeled on the Second and Fourteenth Amendments. But there's a twist: rather than requiring government-funded healthcare, he argues that his amendment would protect individual access to medical services by limiting government regulation.
Shawn questions whether courts would interpret the amendment that way. Marc unexpectedly argues that a national health service may be the more practical solution.
The conversation also explores two other questions:
Are young Americans changing the political landscape? The hosts discuss political realignment, dealignment, and whether generational changes can produce lasting political shifts.
What can we learn from Dolores Huerta? Her work organizing farmworkers raises difficult questions about moral courage, activism, personal sacrifice, and the risks of speaking out against powerful people.
Plus, the hosts debate political favoritism, immigration, and presidential pardons.
And Matt announces that the next episode will be the final episode of the original Latter Day Lens, with news about what comes next.
Question for listeners: What should a constitutional right to healthcare actually guarantee?
